A Guide to Electric Scooter Parts : Scooter store

A Guide to Electric Scooter Parts
by Torrie Cantor
plug itWhen buying electric scooter parts, make sure they're compatible with your scooter. Many customers make a mistake of buying the wrong parts for their scooters.
Popular electric scooter parts are:

- Accessories - Batteries - Chains - Chargers - Controllers - Throttles

Accessories

There are different kinds of accessories available. A popular choice for a scooter's bag is a large multi-compartment bag than can be placed onto the rear cargo rack. A good bag would be made of a cloth that is high resistant to abrasions, tears and scuffs. Twin Velcro straps should hold the bag securely onto the seat rail or post.

You can also choose a basket to be placed in front. Good baskets would be those that fold out of the way when they're no longer in use. Steel construction is the best with thick enamel finish.

You should have a safety warning bell for your scooter. Some bells are made with compasses too. These bells fit all electric scooter and bicycle handlebars. Bells that have a pleasant sound and are audible are advisable.

A bike motor kit includes self-contained removable power unit, a mounting rack and mounting hardware. You can also buy this kit in local motorcycle stores.

A good headlight would have side light markers that provide additional illumination in the right and left side of the scooter. This is for visibility during nighttime.

Your helmet should cover the back of your head to protect it from backward falls. It should have an air-gulping front, top and back holes. There should be a thick shock absorbent lining inside the helmet that can be easily removed and replaced for cleaning purposes. Most importantly, helmets should be certified by the ASTM F1447 helmet standards or any country's helmet standards.

Even though some states don't require scooter drivers to wear helmets, it is still recommended to wear a helmet no matter how short the distance is.

Additional mirrors are also available as extra electric scooter parts. You can choose a round shaped mirror that is made of chrome plated steel, glass and rubber construction. There should be a safety reflector at the back of the mirror.

Batteries

There is a different range of batteries available for electric scooters. If you know the voltage, dimensions or amp hours, you will be able to choose what battery should you require.

Chains

The #25 chain is the most commonly used for electric scooters. This chain has a " spacing between each chain link and is " wide.

Chain Breakers

Chain breakers don't break the chain despite what they're called. Their function is to remove the pins that hold the chain links together. Master links are used to connect chains together in a continuous solid loop.

Chargers

Intellect Charger - An "Intellect Charger" works with electric scooters and bikes that have a 12 Volt battery or two 6 Volt batteries.

Controllers

There are speed controllers for Chinese-made electric scooters. This part helps control the speed of your scooter from full stop to full forward.

Throttles

The Hall Effect Throttle is the most common type that is used on electric scooters. They work on Chinese-made electric scooters and are sometimes called accelerators, twist bar, speed bar, turn throttle, speed control or derailleur.

Another type of throttle is the on / off throttle. This is used for medium size electric scooters.

5k Ohm Throttles are for high-end and older model electric scooters.

The number of mobility scooters on the road has increased dramatically over the past few years due to the aging population. There is however little legislation on who scooters should be used.

Using a mobility scooter is fairly simple. Mobility Scooters are operated using a lever pulling towards the handle bars to move forward and pushing away to reverse. This controls both the reverse and forward movement. To stop the level is released and the scooter will come to a standstill immediately. Most modern scooters can come equipped with lights, both front and rear, horn, basket and speed adjustment control. The control to adjust the speed is an important feature allowing the user to set the mobility scooter speed. This control will set the top speed of the scooter and can be used for example when in shopping centres to ensure the scooter is used in a slow and controlled way.

Mobility scooters are available in two main classes. Class 2 mobility scooters are only for pavement use, with a maximum speed of 4 mph. Class one scooters have a maximum speed to 8mph and can also be used on roads. If these mobility scooters are used on the pavement they must only travel at 4 mph.

Mobility scooters are usually battery powered. The battery is stored on board the scooter and is charged via an onboard or separate battery charger unit from standard electric power. The charting time will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer but allowing your scooter to fully recharge after use will prolong the life of the battery. This will also allow the user to gain maximum distance coverage from the scooter. Depending on the type of scooter the owned the maximum distance which can be covered will vary, but some scooters have a range of up to 20 miles on one charge.

Mobility scooters come in two main forms. These being transportable and non-transportable. The transportable scooters are specifically designed to be dismantled and fit into the boot of a car. These scooters normally have 3 wheels and are ligh weight. Standard scooters usually have four wheels and and heavier than portable scooters.

Using a Mobility Scooter Safely : Scooter store

Using a Mobility Scooter Safely
by Brad Brubaker
plug itA mobility scooter, or adult scooter, is used by people who have trouble walking. It allows them to freely and easily move around. Depending on the unit, some mobility scooters can travel much faster than a person could walk or run. This makes getting around much easier, but it is very important to ensure that you are very careful when using your mobility scooter.
While driving your mobility scooter it is imperative to be especially careful when crossing or driving on the road. Most commercially available mobility scooters are not street legal. Different states have different definitions of what is required to be street legal, but it typically requires that the vehicle include specific lighting and safety features and be licensed and registered with the state. Since most mobility scooters are not street legal, you can typically not drive it on state maintained roads. You should consult your state regulations before attempting to drive your mobility scooter on a road.

Not only can it be illegal to drive your mobility scooter on a state road, it can also be very unsafe. This is because it is much harder to see someone that is on a mobility scooter. A safety flag is a good investment; this is especially true if you will be using your mobility scooter frequently around vehicles. Safety flags improve your visibility to others and attach to your mobility scooter easily. Not only do safety flags make it much easier for people in cars and trucks to see you, but they also make it much easier to maintain contact when traveling in crowds. Since mobility scooters sit so low to the ground it can be easy to get separated from your family or loved ones in crowded areas. A safety flag will make it much easier for them to keep you in sight.

Another way to ensure that you maintain your safety is to avoid placing yourself in situations where you might tip over your mobility scooter. Mobility scooters are designed to be able to traverse small curbs and embankments. It is important to not try to climb over too high a curve though, because you risk tipping over. Your owner's manual will have information describing the maximum curb or embankment that your unit can climb. It is far better to avoid obstacles whenever possible, but if you must navigate a curb or small embankment make sure you meet it head on. A quality mobility scooter will have a set of anti-tip wheels in the back that in normal conditions will help prevent the unit from tipping over backwards. If you attempt to cross a curb at an angle this will negate the effect of the anti-tip wheels.

A mobility scooter can be a powerful device that can restore independence and allow you to move around freely without assistance, but when used improperly or placed in unsafe situations, they can be very dangerous. Always take extra care around roads and intersections, use a safety flag to improve visibility, and take care when attempting to navigate curbs or other obstacles.
